Bell Tower — the first-timer pick

Xi’an’s geographic heart: metro Line 2 to the high-speed rail station, the City Wall, the Muslim Quarter and the Bell and Drum Towers all on foot or a short ride. The international hotels here are the most foreigner-friendly in the city.

Xi’an North Railway Station is the terminus for high-speed services from Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai, and chain and mid-range hotels cluster around it — usually a short taxi or metro ride from the departure halls. None of them are sights in themselves; they are beds and breakfasts positioned for an early departure. If you are transiting, look for one with a free shuttle to the station, and confirm how early it actually runs.

For very early flights, hotels around Xi’an Xianyang International Airport — well north-west of the city — serve the same purpose. The airport is 30–40 minutes from the Bell Tower by taxi or DiDi and longer by shuttle, so a flight before mid-morning is the main reason to stay out there rather than in the centre. Treat this whole corner of the city as a category decision rather than a hunt for a particular property: any clean, well-reviewed chain near the station or the terminals will do the job.

Which area should you pick?

• First-timer with 2–3 nights → Bell Tower. The transport spine, the City Wall and the Muslim Quarter are all on foot or one metro stop away, and the foreigner-friendly international hotels are here.
• Nightlife and light shows → Big Wild Goose Pagoda / Qujiang. You can wander the Datang Never Night City and catch the music fountain without a long ride home.
• Family with kids → Bell Tower or Qujiang. Bell Tower for logistics and easier food; Qujiang if the evening shows and a quieter, more park-like area suit you better.
• Rail transit (early train or late arrival) → near Xi’an North Station. Don’t pay city-centre prices for a room you’ll barely see.

November to February is the cheapest window — rates fall, rooms are easier to find, and you trade the crowds for colder weather and a quieter city.
